Three days hike from Schladming to Obertraun

View from Gjaid-Alm hut of the Dachstein glacier

The Dachstein region is an ideal destination for a three-day hike adventure, far from the chaos of the city and only four hours away from Vienna by train.

We arrived in Schladming by train at noon and headed from the station toward the Guttenberghaus hut, where we spent the night. The hike is 11km long with 1400 meters of elevation gain. After the first 4km, the trail is well marked, but before that, I recommend checking the route on a map, as there are not direct signs for the hut.

Guttenberghaus hut

On the second day, we followed an itinerary that took us from the Guttenberghaus hut to the Gjaid-Alm hut. We created an alternative 18km route on komoot to avoid any potentially exposed trails. It took us six hours to reach our destination, where we were able to pitch our tent and spend the night.

Gjaid-Alm hut

We ended our hike on the third day by returning to Obertraun. From Gjaid-Alm hut, we followed the signs to Obertraun. The trail is entirely downhill and about 7km long. It took us two hours and half to descend. We spent the rest of our day in Obertraun before taking the train back to Vienna.

Tips: Obertraun it’s only a few kilometres from Hallstatt, so it might be worth visiting heading home.
